Mark S. Rossi

Senior Research Associate, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Dr. Rossi has over three decades of experience in creating solutions for safer chemicals, sustainable materials, and environmentally preferable products. Most recently he was the Executive Director at the non-profit environmental research organization, Clean Production Action, where he brought together diverse groups to achieve innovative outcomes.

Dr. Rossi co-founded the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP), a first-of-its-kind initiative to quantitatively measure chemical footprints, and allow manufacturers and retailers to benchmark and communicate their progress in chemical management performance and reductions in hazardous chemicals relative to industry peers.

He led the development of and co-created the chemical hazard assessment method, GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals, and the ecolabel standard, GreenScreen Certified.® Companies across the globe use GreenScreen to select safer chemicals and products in the building, electronics, retail, textile, health care, firefighting foam, apparel, and food service ware sectors.
 
He founded the BizNGO Working Group for Safer Chemicals and Sustainable Materials, which brings business leaders, regulators, and environmentalists together to co-create safer solutions for safer chemicals and sustainable materials.

Dr. Rossi is a recipient of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Scientific and Technology Achievement Award, US EPA Region I’s Environmental Merit Award, and the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable’s MVP2 Ambassador Award. His doctorate is in Environmental Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
