Erwan Saouter

Dr. Erwan Saouter is an internationally recognized expert in environmental science, specializing in life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon neutrality, chemical risk, and global sustainability challenges. With a PhD in environmental sciences, he brings over three decades of experience across private industry, government institutions, academia, and NGOs.

Currently President of Net-Zero Impact SAS, Dr. Saouter advises companies on developing net-zero strategies, conducting carbon and product footprint assessments, implementing the new EU JRC Safe and Sustainable by Design chemical framework (SSbD) and aligning with evolving environmental regulations. He is also a leading authority in chemical risk assessment and regulatory compliance, notably with the EU REACh regulation. Over his career, he has contributed to the development and application of the USEtox model for evaluating chemical toxicity in LCA and the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). His work has led to the creation of thousands of toxicity indicators, helping improve the robustness and comparability of chemical impact assessments in sustainability frameworks.

He previously served as Director of Climate and Energy at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), where he led high-level initiatives to support corporate decarbonization and develop sector-specific roadmaps aligned with the Paris Agreement.

At the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, he played a central role in shaping the EU’s environmental footprint policies, pioneering chemical toxicity indicators and integrating food waste and plastic pollution into environmental metrics. Earlier in his career, he held several leadership roles at Procter & Gamble, where he launched the company’s first global science communication platform and spearheaded stakeholder dialogue on product safety.

Erwan Saouter also co-founded Biocomp-Nepal, a social enterprise recognized by the UNFCCC for turning organic waste into compost to support sustainable agriculture. 

His work has been widely published, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles and a strong track record of public engagement and scientific outreach.

Fluent in French, English, and Italian, Dr. Saouter is known for his visionary thinking, ability to connect stakeholders across sectors, and his commitment to building practical solutions for a sustainable future.
